This is Gertrude. She’s our broody hen. Every morning I gently pick her up from the other girls eggs that she is trying to hatch. She doesn’t connect that we have no rooster thus there are no little chicks growing inside. I take her to the goats milk I just poured in the container… So she can gulp it down. She fluffs her feathers, spins around and heads back into the hen house to find eggs to sit on. I learn from her dedication and tenacity to attend to the task at hand. Farm life teaches me many life lessons I’d have gotten no other way.
